Review Premier DC4311 Digital Camera [4MP 3xOptical] / Premier DC4311:The Premier DC4311's most impressive feature is its resolution; it boasts a four-megapixel CCD. This will capture 2272 x 1704 images, suitable for making good size enlargements. The camera looks purposeful rather than sexy and the layout could be a little better; when holding it your right thumb tends to find itself slap in the middle of the LCD screen. Some of the buttons are also too small. There are controls for some of the more common features, such as the flash mode and the LCD on/off, but for most other functions you'll have to delve into the system of menus. There are three shooting modes in automatic; landscape, portrait and night. Switch to manual and you've control over the usual basic setup including sensitivity and exposure. It comes replete with an 8 MB SD card but if you insist on using all those juicy pixels this can fit just five images. You'll need extra cards or else curb your enthusiasm for four-megapixel images. Shooting outdoors in reasonable light is effective, with good contrast and particularly good colour balance. [+]Using flash indoors is equally pleasing and accurate. Low light levels without the flash are not such a success; pictures getting muddy and "warm" rapidly. Using the macro seems to be better, as long as you avoid the flash and light things carefully. Getting the most of more difficult conditions requires some experimentation with the settings. There is perhaps just a little too much compression too with images going a trifle soft on close examination. The compression level is fixed, you simply have control over the image size. What you do get of course is whopping great images, which means you can crop and frame pictures without losing too much detail in the process. Despite the size it takes just two batteries, which can lead to some frighteningly short times between changes if you use standard alkaline. Seeing the low power warning appear after 10 minutes is disappointing. Turning off the LCD will help of course. For better results use high-power alkaline, or ideally high power NiMh rechargeables. The camera can be slow writing an image to the card and the flash struggles to recharge quickly after discharging. There's a burst mode which will capture up to three images in quick succession which helps. There's no movie mode but you do get a natty 2. 8x optical zoom lens. All told, the Premier DC4311 lacks some of the niceties of other four-megapixel digital cameras, but if you want the maximum pixels along with a sharp price then the DC4311 takes some beating. -Miles Berkeley.
